Church Services on Sunday December 29th, 2013

Welcome to the website of the Church of the Holy Spirit and Sunday Evening Fellowship, Vientiane, Laos: an international group of believers and seekers from many different backgrounds, sharing together the Good News of the Lord Jesus Christ.

" When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him. But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”
(Acts 7: 54-56)

Church of the Holy Spirit:

The Church of the Holy Spirit morning service will be at the ARDA Language Centre at 10 a.m. (Click here for directions how to get there.)

This Sunday morning, we will again be having a Service of Holy Communion.
Our Holy Communion services customarily follow a liturgy drawn from the Anglican Church. Since we are an international congregation from a range of backgrounds and traditions, the liturgy we use has been chosen to be as inclusive as possible. You certainly do not require to be Anglican or a member of a particular denomination to share with us at the Communion table. The table around which we share the bread and wine belongs to the Lord Jesus Christ and all who love him and seek to love him more are invited to participate with us.
Since we celebrate Holy Communion towards the end of our worship service, if you do not feel that you wish to participate in the sacrament, you are welcome to join with us and remain seated while others gather round the table. This is entirely normal and acceptable. In other words, do not let the fact that we are celebrating Communion, stop you from joining us at church. We warmly welcome you to be with us, wherever you might consider yourself to be on your life's journey.

This is the first Sunday of Christmas

The Bible readings for this Sunday are:

Psalm - Psalm 31 / Listen.

New Testament - Acts 6:1 - 8:7 / Listen.

"He is the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them— he remains faithful forever. He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets prisoners free, the Lord gives sight to the blind, the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down, the Lord loves the righteous. The Lord watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked. The Lord reigns forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the Lord."

" Endow the king with your justice, O God, the royal son with your righteousness. May he judge your people in righteousness, your afflicted ones with justice. May the mountains bring prosperity to the people, the hills the fruit of righteousness. May he defend the afflicted among the people and save the children of the needy; may he crush the oppressor. May he endure as long as the sun, as long as the moon, through all generations. May he be like rain falling on a mown field, like showers watering the earth. In his days may the righteous flourish and prosperity abound till the moon is no more.

But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

Welcome to the website of the Church of the Holy Spirit and Sunday Evening Fellowship, Vientiane, Laos: an international group of believers and seekers from many different backgrounds, sharing together the Good News of the Lord Jesus Christ.

"The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

"“I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified."

Church Services on Sunday November 3rd, 2013

Welcome to the website of the Church of the Holy Spirit and Sunday Evening Fellowship, Vientiane, Laos: an international group of believers and seekers from many different backgrounds, sharing together the Good News of the Lord Jesus Christ.

"The Lord is exalted over all the nations, his glory above the heavens. Who is like the Lord our God, the One who sits enthroned on high, who stoops down to look on the heavens and the earth? He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes, with the princes of his people. He settles the childless woman in her home as a happy mother of children. Praise the Lord.
(Psalm 113:4-9)

This Sunday is the twenty fourth Sunday after Pentecost

The Bible readings for this Sunday are:

Old Testament - Psalm 113 / Listen.

New Testament - Luke 16: 1-13 / Listen.

(Click on the reference to read the passage, or alternatively, click on "Listen" to hear the chapter containing the verses being read - to do this you need to have RealPlayer installed on your computer or mobile device. Creche facilities: There are currently several families with young children who are part of the congregation. We welcome people of all ages in church but if needed, we have a creche where we are happy to help with looking after young children and babies.

Pakse Air Crash - 16th October 2013 : Prayer and Support

Pakse Air Crash

As most people connected in some way with Laos will be aware, Lao Airlines flight QV301 crashed on Wednesday as it prepared to land in stormy weather at Pakse airport in southern Laos. The forty four passengers and five crew are all thought to have died. As I type this, the search continues to recover the victims .

Living as I do, beside the River Mekong, in Vientiane, I also hear the sound of festivities as this year's boat racing festival takes place. There seems an incongruity between the happiness of the festivities here while I know that downstream in Pakse, there is so much grief and the pain of unfulfilled longing and loss.
In the Bible, Saint Paul tells the Christian community in Rome to "rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep".

Today I want to try to help those who are in the latter category.

The Christian community here has been impacted through the loss of two of its own young people. I know that the sense of loss and shock goes far beyond our immediate church community. At times of crisis such as these, people often sense a need to look for spiritual support and also want to know what they can do to help friends and loved ones, who are hurting because of what has happened.

It is always good to make time to listen to those who are grieving. If you or someone you are concerned about wants to spend time talking about how they have been affected by the Pakse crash, then please email me at thechs@gmail.com and I will make a priority of finding time to try to help.

As a Christian, I believe in the power and willingness of God to hear and answer prayer.

Please pray for the families and friends of all those who have died - that they will find comfort in their loss.

Pray for all those involved in the effort to recover their loved ones, that in the midst of difficult conditions, they will have the strength to persevere until the work is done.

Pray for the practical arrangements that have to be made to help families to get to Pakse and for good communication between the authorities and those who are mourning, that there will be care and sensitivity shown and if expectations are not met, that there will be God-given grace and patience to cope.

Pray for those whose job it is to find out what caused the crash, that they will be given every assistance to help answer the questions of those who want to know what happened and to enable those in positions of responsibility to take the necessary steps to lessen the likelihood of tragedies like this happening again.

If you are not accustomed to praying, you don't need to do anything more than pour out your heart to God. As we're reminded in the Old Testament, in Psalm 147, verse 3: "He heals the broken-hearted and binds up their wounds."

For any of you whose background makes you more familiar with more structured prayers, I hope you will find the following helpful.

Gracious God,
through your Son you have taught us
that nothing in life or death
is able to separate us from your love.
Look in mercy on all
to whom great sorrow has come
through the air crash in Pakse.
Console and protect
those who have lost loved ones.
Strengthen the members of the recovery teams
and all who seek to bring relief and comfort.
Give your light in the darkness
to all who are near to despair,
and assure them that you hold all souls in life;
through Jesus Christ our risen Lord.
Amen.

There will be two English language church services happening as usual at ARDA Language Centre tomorrow at 10 am and 5 pm. If you are not in the habit of coming to church but because of what has happened would like to attend, please do so. I will be happy to meet with you and pray with you after either of these services.

Kind regards,

Tony (Pastor - Church of the Holy Spirit)
